Why take this course

CPD Provider LogoAs well as giving you effective skills and techniques for reducing anxiety, this 1-day workshop will deepen your understanding of the essential role anxiety plays in our lives.

Having evolved to keep us safe, why is anxiety becoming so problematic for increasing numbers of people, seriously impacting their lives as it affects their thoughts, behaviours, emotions and physical health? What purpose do its symptoms serve? And, most importantly, what can we do to help people tame their anxiety so that it helps rather than harms them?

Suitable for professionals and anyone interested for personal reasons*, by setting anxiety in the broader context of our overall emotional health, this course gives you the means to relate your new knowledge and skills to your own experiences and observations, and the people you want to help.

You will gain a thorough understanding of the causes of dysfunctional anxiety – such as panic attacks, social anxiety, generalised anxiety (GAD), health or performance anxiety etc – as well as the additional challenges of addressing anxiety when it is a factor of trauma, bipolar, ADHD or autism.

You will also have the chance throughout the day to practice the new skills, techniques and strategies you will learn…

NB This course was previously entitled ‘How to help with Chronic Anxiety

What the course covers

  • The purpose of anxiety and how it helps to keep us safe
  • The stress responses common to both fear and anxiety – and how this fits within the broader context of the mental health continuum
  • The many different ways anxiety may present and be experienced – and the multiple causes for this
  • What happens in the brain when we become anxious – insights from neuroscience
  • How anxiety affects the body and our physical health – and how the body affects anxiety
  • Why effective interventions must include strategies to work with the 4 key elements: thoughts, emotions, behaviours and physical responses
  • The causes, indications and impacts of dysfunctional anxiety
  • Why anxiety problems are increasing
  • How to recognise panic attacks and deal with them effectively
  • How unconscious pattern matching (a key feature of trauma) can cause anxious thoughts, feelings and behaviours, apparently out of the person’s control
  • Why some people may dissociate (appear to ‘tune out’ or not be present) when very stressed, and what to do about it
  • Understanding why anxiety can be a feature for those with autistic spectrum disorder, ADHD, bipolar or borderline personality disorder
  • The role of sleep and dreaming in helping us to manage anxiety
  • Case study discussion including common presentations such as social, performance and health anxiety

PLUS effective, holistic tools and strategies drawing on up-to-date research evidence including:

  • How to separate a person from their anxiety
  • What is ‘acceptance’ and what is its role in recovery?
  • Avoiding ‘avoidance’: how to enable a client to overcome fear and re-engage in a safe and structured way with key areas of their experience
  • Multiple tools and techniques to reduce emotional arousal quickly
  • Psychoeducation – straightforward and memorable understandings that can be shared immediately with clients
  • Effective ways to challenge and work with anxious thoughts
  • Opportunities to explore behavioural approaches
  • Utilising the powerful resource of imagination (a resource that many anxious individuals inadvertently misuse)
  • How to make goal setting an effective part of therapy
  • The use of story as an agent for positive change
  • How positive visualisation can make change more likely to happen
  • How to approach anxiety when it is caused by: past experience, present circumstances or future fears
  • How to use the client’s own resources – and how to find and access these
  • How to combine our expertise and the client’s to co-create solutions and an ‘action-plan’ that work for them
  • Implementing RIGAAR and the APET model
  • And more…

During the workshop you will have the opportunity to apply this learning to whole-case scenarios and to learn and observe practical skills which you will be able to practise during the day.

Who is this course suitable for?

  • Anyone who works with or treats people who may be highly anxious – such as psychotherapists, counsellors, HR personnel, life and business coaches, the emergency services, health and social care professionals, educators, chaplains, outreach workers, social workers, therapeutic coaches, pastoral care, youth offending, complementary therapists and individuals working in a variety of capacities in any number of organisations.
