Why take this course
Moral Injury is a very real cause of psychological distress often characterised by feelings of grief, shame, guilt, disgust, contempt, anger and a sense of betrayal, which can lead to depression, substance misuse, even suicide.
Originally identified in veterans and others affected by war, moral injury can affect anyone in high-intensity, emotionally impactful settings, and occurs in response to having had to act in a way, or having witnessed behaviours, which go against an individual’s values and moral beliefs. Left unresolved it can lead to a cycle of negative behaviours and decisions. Successfully addressing these feelings can prevent further harm – including to those around them – and lead to improved mental health so that they can lead fulfilling lives and maintain healthy relationships once more.
If your work involves supporting distressed individuals, it’s important to have a clear understanding of moral injury and how to identify it. This course will keep you up-to-date with the latest research and understandings about how best to help.
So what is moral injury? How do we recognise it? What does it mean? How does it relate to trauma? And, perhaps most importantly, how can we help people to recover? Or ourselves, if we have suffered like this…
Excellent training – a good balance of information and interactive learning...
Caroline Gee

This topic has been of personal interest to me because of the lack of integrity and action of a large national organisation in order to protect their own reputation. This has resulted in considerable stress and personal suffering to me and my children. While I think I have pretty much come to terms with what has happened, I see this pattern of behaviour in many other organisations and have experience of similar stories from some of my clients. It is, of course, everywhere in the news, from the Post Office scandal to politics, to the military, to the NHS and more. It is a very important topic and one I feel will become more and more relevant in years to come. Ros always produces very structured and relevant content, with beautiful and engaging slides.
Such a useful course, with lots of information – techniques to take away and use with clients, lots of opportunities to discuss what we had covered, and lots of real-life examples. The content was great and really well presented, including lots of links/books/articles to develop further.
I have followed the work of Human Givens since 2007, but this was the first HG professional training course I have attended. I was diagnosed with PTSD in 2006 and a HG-trained therapist fave me my first therapy in 2007. She then worked with a local priest to create a support group for me as I really was in a bad way. This precedent eventually led to the creation of PTSD Oxfordshire Fellowship, which provides practical support to those with PTSD and C-PTSD. I had an inkling that there was more to learn and I applied for a place immediately I saw it advertised. The wonderfully researched and presented course on moral injury far exceeded my expectations. I shall now spread the word among our Fellowship and beyond. It was also good to share the course with therapists who obviously had so much combined professional experience.
I really like Ros’s interactive teaching style and very clear explanations. I think she dealt with the technical and other difficulties professionally and without losing her calm, positive manner. I would recommend this course to anyone working with people as it not only dealt with the aspect of moral injury, but put it clearly in the bio-psycho-social framework of the HG model.
A fantastic course. I have learnt so much – both knowledge and practical tools.
This was interactive, informative and very engaging. The presenter was methodical and interesting to listen to. I enjoyed getting to talk to others on the course from interesting backgrounds. Unfortunately, I had to leave early – a family situation came up. But because the pre-course notes are so good and I got a flavour of the day, I will definitely look forward to the recording.
Great course to help your clients deal with moral injury and damaging beliefs.
Very informative on a subject that I felt my knowledge was lacking.
Packed full of information that allowed me to understand the subtle differences between PTSD, Moral Injury and when both present together. Useful hints and tips and how to reframe the client comments Moral Injury presents.
I found the course very informative and well laid out. I found Ros to be a great tutor and made information easy to understand and apply. I did find I had to leave the course a little early as it was supposed to finish at 4, and I think it ran on just a little past this. Really liked the handout material.
Really interesting course. A lot to think about and Ros definitely knows her subject. Thank you.
Excellent, clear and interactive. It will help me in both my psychologist and therapist roles. Thank you, Ros.
A very informative, comprehensive day regarding Moral Injury. Very relevant and good to draw attention to the similarities, but also the differences with PTSD. Was good to hear the participation and input from others.
The presentation was amazing. Ros is an incredibly inspirational tutor, interesting and vibrant and oh so knowledgeable. The content was amazing. Stuffed full of facts and about moral injury, how to identify it and what to do about it. She demonstrated how to use familiar techniques in new and interesting ways. I was exhausted but amazed at the end of this course. I will be watching the replay, just in case I missed something.
The Moral Injury course taught/presented by Ros Townsend was very detailed and informative. The clarity of the delivery ensured that I understood the detail and nuance of the subject and was able to integrate it with my previous Human Givens study and experience.
Such an interesting course really delving deep into the details of the meaning of moral injury and how this area can be overlooked and misunderstood in the work of the trauma.
Excellent training with a good balance of information and interactive learning.
The trainer was very clear, informed and encouraging of participation and knew her subject well – and the timing/pace of the day worked. Many of the therapists were HG therapists, and so practised from this approach/knew the frameworks/techniques used. I was one of 3/4 I think who had a different theoretical approach. This didn’t get too much in the way of being able to utilise the learning from the course. I work with refugees alongside interpreters and our clients live in poverty/are marginalised and still at risk (people seeking asylum) and the training/examples felt at times far removed from my refugee work. Many of the examples given by the trainer/the participants were about military veterans. But I was still able to draw material from the course that I can apply in the refugee context.
Well delivered by Ros. Lots of interesting content, exercises and opportunity for questions and discussion.
I attended Ros’s course on Moral Injury today and it was both eye-opening and profoundly impactful. Ros seamlessly integrated insights from the Human Givens approach, offering a practical and compassionate framework to understand and address moral injury. The depth of knowledge, clarity of explanation and actionable strategies provided were outstanding. This course not only deepened my clinical understanding or moral injury dynamics, but also equipped me with practical tools grounded in Human Givens principles that I can apply in real-world, clinical contexts. I highly recommend this to anyone seeking a fresh, effective approach to a challenging and contemporary issue.
Amazing! Full of insights and practical help and ideas. I learnt so much and feel encouraged to try a few things with this greater awareness I now have. Thanks to Ros, Arlene and everyone for their ideas and input.
So inspiring, thought through, well delivered, inspirational with clear course notes. I felt really sad that I had to leave early as I had so many questions popping up in my mind about the subject. So many clients sprang to mind while the uncovering of the content was going on. Thank you Ros!
Absolutely brilliant! I did not understand the term ‘Moral Injury’ but quickly realised that I could recognise the condition as I thought about clients who had not responded as well to a rewind as I expected. It was interactive and informative, so we had opportunities to apply our learning.
A very important topic in which Ros addressed the need for new learning in therapy – showing that HG moves with new understandings and experience. I am sure that all therapists in the ‘room’ had lightbulb moments about past and current clients re stuckness and re-emergence of PTSD symptoms. I will use the additional tips often in my work with clients.
Thorough, information paced really well, answered questions knowledgeably and with care.
Such an insightful course that will go a long way in helping me to be a more effective therapist; delivered with such honesty, openness and compassion. Well worth doing!
As per usual, Ros’s deep understanding and experience of being an excellent Human Givens Therapist, shone through. The course was delivered with quality and generosity. I learned much and would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about working with Moral Injury and helping clients to alleviate guilt, shame and blame.
The content of this course gave me eye opening information which helps with widening the understanding of contextual frameworks in which complex behaviours may be perceived with more clarity within various circumstances. I found the course overall brilliant and fascinating.
This was an informative course with plenty of opportunity to discuss in small groups and share examples. Learning about a fairly new concept and being able to apply it in therapy using the HG principles was helpful. Ros is a very experienced practitioner and simplifies the complex, bringing case studies to life and explaining concepts in a way that makes them accessible and transferable. Thank you!
As a practising therapist, I found yesterday’s course on moral injury really valuable. The Human Givens framework offers an elegant approach for understanding and treating moral injury through its focus on emotional needs and innate resources. The APET model provides a clear way to understand how moral injuries develop, whilst the emphasis on reflective listening before reframing resonated with how I like to work. Learning about the relationship between moral injury and trauma was invaluable, and will help me make more informed decisions about whether to address trauma first through rewind technique or focus on managing emotional arousal. Most importantly, the course demonstrated practical applications of guided imagery and metaphor to help clients integrate new, more helpful narratives – tools I look forward to implementing in my work.
This very useful course was delivered in an interesting and informative way.
I now realise that some of my past clients may have been exhibiting signs of moral injury and it will be easier effectively to treat these cases in the future.
The course was very thought provoking and interesting. The day was a good mix of presentation and group discussion – it is always nice to interact with other professionals. I gained a lot of insight into Moral Injury and feel this will be useful for my clients and my supervisees.
A complex subject was explained by Ros very helpfully, giving a set of organising ideas.
Interesting day, full of good ideas for understanding the depths of clients’ problems.
Ros is a great teacher, she obviously put a great deal of hard work in to produce this training, which was packed full of useful and useable information, it was also thought provoking and inspiring. I enjoyed this training, as I have enjoyed all of Ros’s other trainings, please keep them coming. Well done you!
Many Thanks
Course was very informative and gave a better understanding on moral injury. Excellent resources on identifying moral injury alongside trauma. Also useful tools to consider on working with someone with a moral injury. Interactive with opportunity for small group discussion. Felt a safe environment to ask questions and get areas explained. .
The course was very interesting and informative. Ros was brilliant and very knowledgeable on the subject of Moral Injury. Thank you to Arlene too, for keeping us all up to date on the technical front.
Just superb. Well put together and presented and the accompanying notes were easy to download and informative.
Ros is such an engaging teacher and very well informed. The knowledge gained from this course is going to be extremely valuable going forward, and I will certainly be using it in my formulations.
Excellent presentation and content.
I found this course intensely interesting. I feel I learned so much while it also validated what I already know and use. My favourite courses are those where I feel I’ve been expertly taught and today was one of those. An excellent ratio of learning to discussion.
Ros was, as ever, very thought provoking and interesting. I especially liked her comments on how PTSD and Moral Injury interact and the need to treat both, and how you might approach treating moral injury. I’ll be using her ideas in my work directly.
Makes total sense and I see it a great deal from both sides. Good to put a name to it as an actual thing.
