Why take this course

Alongside an increased awareness of neurodiversity, there has been a sharp increase in the diagnosis of autism and ADHD in adults and people seeking help as a result. Being neurodivergent impacts all areas of life, from work, relationships, physical and mental health, to confidence and self-esteem, and the safety and accessibility of therapeutic spaces.

Sadly, research and client feedback shows that many neurodivergent people have had poor experiences in counselling, healthcare and other support settings. Clients and patients report feeling othered, overwhelmed or unsafe, having difficulty communicating and having to mask their true selves; some clients also feel that their strengths and resources were not recognised or appreciated.

But it doesn’t have to be this way – with the right knowledge and skills we can create genuinely supportive helping environments, where our clients feel safe, and adapt our practice to become authentically and compassionately more neuro-inclusive.

This course is designed to deepen your understanding of how neurodivergent clients experience the world differently and have different needs when accessing support as a result. Your tutor for the day is S.J. Reilly, an experienced therapist who specialises in working with neurodivergent clients and has ADHD herself. Throughout the day, she will explore how typical approaches can cause problems for some people and how simple adaptations to practice can increase your effectiveness and put neurodivergent clients at their ease.
