All you need to know to overcome stress, panic attacks, phobias, trauma, obsessions and more...

by Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell

This down-to-earth and easy-to-read book is a life-changer. Thousands of people, suffering from a wide range of anxiety disorders – from panic attacks and phobias to post-traumatic stress and obsessive thoughts – have already benefited from the many insights and psychological techniques it contains, and now you can too.

Packed full of useful information, 'How to Master Anxiety' will not only throw light on the causes of your anxiety but, more importantly, show you how to control it. Its clear and practical advice is suitable for anyone who wants to conquer their own over-anxious behaviour – whatever it is – or to help others overcome theirs.

With plenty of easy-to-learn techniques to help you relax, avoid ‘black and white thinking’ and change your perspective on whatever it is you fear, it also includes encouraging case studies to show how others have successfully mastered all kinds of anxious and phobic behaviour.

Essential information for every anxious person:

— How anxiety and stress are closely related, how to recognise when you are under stress and what to do about it
— What exactly is going on in your body when anxiety overwhelms you and why it reacts like this – understanding lessens the fear

"This book is a further wonderful aid. It throws, as it were, a rope to a drowning person. It gives the reader an immediate feeling that it is possible to take control again. And it is down-to-earth.

The authors begin by explaining the process — what is happening to us physiologically, emotionally and cognitively — when we become anxious. They explain for example what is happening in our bodies when we are in an anxious state and over-breathing. The knowledge that the physical symptoms we experience are due to a greater or lesser degree of hyperventilation — and nothing more serious — itself has a calming effect. And they show us how to reverse this. Similarly the knowledge that anxiety is a natural survival mechanism — the fight/flight response — helps our understanding of what is going on when we become aroused and anxious. Becoming aroused and anxious has in turn a profound effect on our thinking processes and our perspective on life. And the authors have masses of practical suggestions for bringing sanity to negative thinking processes.

Within the pages of this book you will find practical information about, and specific techniques for overcoming, generalised worry; poor sleep and how this can lead to depression; post-traumatic stress; obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD); panic attacks; agoraphobia; phobias; psychosis. There is also a variety of case studies — examples of people whose problems have been relieved.

The book is well laid out and easy to read. It has headings and sub-headings which are clear and accessible and little “nuggets” of information highlighted along the way.

Being given this book is like being given a key. It is based on scientific insights and is unemotional and immediately practical. It makes anxiety understandable and reversible."
